Downsizing

Downsizing can be extremely overwhelming and emotional. Moving from the family home to a smaller space can feel like an impossible task, with so many years of memories and sentimental items, it’s hard to know where to start. We’re here to help you to identify what items are must haves for your new home, and then to help you to pack, donate, or sell anything that you are ready to let go of.

Decades of living in the same home, accumulating things as well as memories; it isn’t an easy thing to do. If you have decided it’s time to move into a smaller home or transition into a retirement village, allow me to help you go through the things in your home, choosing what to keep and take with you, and what you can now discard. I will pack up the items you are keeping with care, seal and label the boxes in preparation for your move, and remove all the items you no longer want; donating them to local charities.

If necessary, I can also organise storage space for the things you simply aren’t ready to let go of – and that is perfectly ok.

Decluttering

Our general decluttering service aims to leave you with a space that is calm and liveable. Too often, homes with excess clutter leave you overwhelmed and stressed – many people don’t realise how much visual clutter prevents the brain from being able to fully relax! We can help you to make a plan and sort through the excess, helping you to attain an organised, ordered environment.

Any items you choose to let go of will be packaged up and taken to a charity for donation at the end of the session.

Deceased Estate

Being told that a family member has passed away is traumatic in itself. The thought of having to deal with all their belongings is probably something you would much rather avoid. It can be a very emotionally draining and overwhelming process; having to sort through a house full of items, finding things that bring back a flood of memories, and then deciding what to do with it all.

We are here to offer supportive and respectful assistance, relieving some of the stress with a sensitive, hands on, and tailored approach. Whatever your situation, we’re here to make it easier for you.

Home Organisation

The Next Chapter Decluttering can work with you in any area of your home to simplify your life and help restore a sense of order. Together we can tailor solutions for you that are functional, well-organised, and most importantly easy to maintain.

Clutter tends to build up slowly over a period of time until it reaches a critical point where you feel you can no longer function at your best. Certain areas of the home become ‘dumping grounds’ for items that we intend to put away, however as the pile grows, it becomes more and more difficult to tackle. If you are finding yourself overwhelmed by the clutter, we are here to help.

We declutter surfaces, pantries, cupboards, rooms and entire houses.
We organise kitchens, wardrobes, offices, and bedrooms.

We work with you, ensuring that the organisational system is one that works for you and your needs.

Hoarding + Squalor

Christine’s background in psychology allows her to appropriately plan and respond to cases of hoarding and squalor, assisting residents in an empathetic, reassuring, and respectful way. The aim of this service is to improve the quality of living for these residents, and so we aim to gain an understanding of the issues at hand so we can tailor a plan that achieves that outcome.
Due to the sensitive nature of this service, the cost and time estimate is subject to consultation.

About Us

The Next Chapter Decluttering was born from the notion that those of us about to embark onto the next stage of our lives; be it selling up and moving on, downsizing from the family home, or clearing out the home that is now left empty as a result of death; it is a time of turning the page onto a new adventure.

I am honoured that you have invited me into your home to help you move forward onto the next stage of your life. Without realizing it, many of us live in a cluttered and disorganized environment, with no real understanding of how stressful it truly is, and for the past fourteen years I have been helping people declutter their homes; whether it is a case of severe hoarding and squalor, an elderly couple moving into retirement and needing to downsize, a single person who is simply overwhelmed by the process and cannot do it alone, or the clearing out of a deceased estate; and I can unequivocally testify to you that the process of decluttering your home is one of pure relief and emotional release. We all have more than we need, including me, and it is time to start letting it all go. It can be hard, but I guarantee, well worth it.

While not a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination, I do try to live simply. I practice what I preach. During our journey together, I will be by your side, guiding you through the decisions that need to be made about your things. Hugs are always available.

The Next Chapter Decluttering services all areas of the Northern Rivers, NSW.

“I absolutely love what I do! It can be quite physically and mentally demanding for me, as well as the client, but when I see a sense of lightness and calm wash over a client’s expression, I know I’ve been able to make someone else’s life just a little bit less overwhelming.”

FAQ’s

I ask that clients provide no less than 48 hours notice if the session needs to be cancelled or postponed. Failure to do so may result in a Cancellation Fee.

In order to answer this, ask yourself ‘how many times have I tried to do this on my own and gotten nowhere?’ The only honest way I can answer this is by letting you know that past clients have shown great appreciation for me coming into their lives and helping them sort through the clutter.

Many have expressed that they didn’t know where or how to begin, they feel lighter, and they couldn’t have done it without me. For some, I am only needed for one session, simply to get them motivated to go it alone. For others, they find it difficult to get started without me present; and that is perfectly fine.

You can pay with either cash, cheque, or via bank transfer.

The Next Chapter Decluttering is a Professional Member of the Institute of Professional Organisers, and is bound their Code of Conduct. I do have signage on the back of my car, and if you would rather I park away from your home to avoid passers by seeing this, I am happy to oblige. In some instances I may ask to take Before and After photos, which are kept anonymous, and only for the purpose of other potential clients to see the differences that can be achieved. With your permission, they may be added to the website.

I am not a Registered Clinical Psychologist, but I do hold a Bachelor Degree in Psychology.

It depends on the item. Some of the larger de-clutters (where we are going through the entire house) may need a Skip Bin (additional cost) to get rid of the things are damaged in anyway and no longer useable or salvageable. Items that can be donated to local charities are boxed or bagged up, and I take them with me and give to the charity of your choice.

If there are items that are worth a relatively decent amount of money, I can help you to sell online via the local Buy, Swap, Sell pages on Facebook. If we are decluttering to put the house on the market, or it is a Deceased Estate, I will offer to set up and run a Garage Sale on your behalf.

I am located on the Northern Rivers of NSW, and service any location from Tweed Heads to Grafton, and out to Kyogle. However, towns beyond the immediate Lismore/Ballina area incur a travel fee (dependent on the time it takes to get there).

You will not be forced to get rid of anything that you don’t want to. All decisions are entirely up to you, however the reason why you have contacted me is because you are feeling overwhelmed with the process of decluttering on your own. When there are items that you are unsure about, have doubts, or cannot decide, I will ask you questions about the item to help you come to a decision. Remember, our goal is to get your home free of the stuff that has been weighing you down and adding stress to your life. But nothing gets thrown out without your permission.

What does a session look like?

Every session is different depending on the job, and of course the client. That being said, we always start with an Initial Consultation to take the opportunity to meet each other and view your home, so we can get an idea of the task. From that point, we determine the priority, and work through it bit by bit. We understand that the process can be overwhelming and at times emotional, so we are here to support you every step of the way, and our aim is always to encourage you with care – not to push you.

How much we can get done in a session depends on many factors, and although we aim to get through the tasks as efficiently as we can, we will always move at a pace that is comfortable for you – we work the session around your goals. At the end of the session, we take any of the culled clutter away with us, so you’re left with a clean space, and can relax and enjoy your newfound peace!
